Pool heat pumps: common questions

Extend your swimming season with an energy-efficient pool and spa heat pump. Here are the questions we get asked most.

What size pool heat pump do I need?

It mainly comes down to the volume of your pool, whether it has a spa, how warm you want the water and how long you want to swim each year. As a rough guide, the AstroMax W17 suits pools up to about 20,000L, the C24 up to about 30,000L, the H35 Turbo up to about 60,000L and the R40 up to about 80,000L.

A pool cover makes a big difference to heat-up times and running costs. If you're unsure, our team can help you pick the right size.

Do I need single phase or 3 phase power?

The W17, C24, M30 and H35 Turbo all run on standard single phase power, which most homes already have. The R40 and B50 need a 3 phase supply.

Check your switchboard, or ask your electrician, before ordering a 3 phase model. A dedicated circuit may be required depending on the model and your existing wiring.

Are pool heat pumps cheap to run?

Heat pumps move heat from the air into your pool water rather than generating it, so they use far less energy than gas or electric resistance heaters. Inverter models like the AstroMax range also slow down once the pool is at temperature, which keeps running costs low.

If you have rooftop solar, running the heat pump during the day can reduce costs further.

How is a pool heat pump installed?

A pool heat pump connects into your existing filtration plumbing and needs a suitable electrical supply. Installation should be carried out by a licensed plumber and electrician. Installation and delivery are sold separately.

Can I swim in winter with a heat pump?

Yes. Heat pumps keep working in cooler air, though output drops as the air temperature falls. Choosing the right size for your pool and using a pool cover are the keys to comfortable swimming through the cooler months.
